Spring and fall visits are not automatically duplicate appointments. Houston equipment works hard in cooling mode for much of the year, while the heating system may sit idle until a cold front. A pre-season check gives each mode attention before you depend on it.
What a Spring Visit Focuses On
A cooling check can include airflow and filter condition, electrical connections, condensate drainage, outdoor-unit condition, controls, and cooling operation. Drainage and humidity management are especially relevant during Houston's long cooling season. The scope should be clear in the service description, not just called a "tune-up."
What a Fall Visit Focuses On
Heating service depends on the equipment. A gas furnace needs appropriate combustion, venting, ignition, and safety-control checks by a qualified technician. A heat pump needs heating-mode operation and any auxiliary or backup heat evaluated. Shared components such as the blower and filter still matter, but a cooling-only visit does not necessarily test heat operation.
Do You Need Two Visits Every Year?
ENERGY STAR recommends pre-season cooling checks in spring and heating checks in fall. Whether those are two separate visits or a carefully scoped combined appointment depends on your equipment, climate, warranty requirements, and contractor's service plan. Ask exactly which modes and safety checks are included, and keep the records. Between visits, check filters and call sooner for leaks, weak airflow, unusual smells, or recurring alerts.
