Furnace Not Turning On? 7 Things Houston Homeowners Should Check

NexAir Solutions

On the first cold morning, a furnace that will not start can feel urgent. These checks stay on the homeowner side of the cabinet. Do not bypass safety switches, handle gas piping, or work on wiring.

If you smell gas, leave immediately and contact your gas utility or emergency services from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave and call emergency services. Do not continue troubleshooting.

Seven Checks You Can Make

1. Thermostat mode: Set it to HEAT and raise the setpoint above the room temperature. Give the system a few minutes to respond.

2. Thermostat power: Check the display and replace batteries if your model uses them. A blank display may also point to a power issue elsewhere.

3. Schedule or hold: Verify that an away schedule or vacation setting has not lowered the heating target.

4. Air filter: If it is dirty, replace it with the correct size and airflow direction. Restricted airflow can cause a furnace to shut down on a safety limit.

5. Breaker and service switch: Check whether the breaker is tripped or the furnace's nearby switch was turned off. If a breaker trips again, stop and call a professional; do not keep resetting it.

6. Visible vents and returns: Make sure furniture or rugs have not blocked major airflow paths. Do not close a number of supply vents to force heat elsewhere.

7. Thermostat message: Write down or photograph any displayed alert. The exact code and thermostat model help a technician; do not clear a recurring fault just to make it run.

When the Checks Do Not Restore Heat

A failed igniter, flame-sensing problem, condensate issue, control fault, or blower problem needs proper diagnosis. Repeated starts and stops, soot, burning smells, or unusual noises are reasons to leave the equipment off and request service. A heat pump's startup sequence is different, so first confirm which type of heating system you have.
